CREST, a leading provider of advanced marine and industrial filtration solutions, is proud to announce its selection as the designated supplier for the Sea Water Filtration Package for the landmark Sakarya Gas Field Development Project – Phase 3. The contract was awarded by the project's EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation) lead, Qidong Wison Energy Trading Ltd., on behalf of the final owner, Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO).
This significant award underscores CREST's growing reputation for engineering excellence and its capability to deliver critical infrastructure components for one of the world's most challenging and strategically vital offshore energy projects.
The Sakarya Gas Field, discovered in August 2020, represents Turkey's largest-ever natural gas discovery, with proven reserves of 405 billion cubic meters (BCM). Located approximately 170 kilometers offshore in the Black Sea at a water depth of 2,150 meters, the field is being developed in three phases by TPAO to significantly enhance the nation's energy self-sufficiency and reduce its dependence on natural gas imports.
Phase 1 achieved first gas in 2023, utilizing a subsea tie-back to an onshore facility at Filyos. Phase 2 involved the addition of a floating production unit (FPU) to boost capacity. Phase 3, the most ambitious stage to date, entails a new, dedicated FPU fed by 32 wells (26 from Sakarya and 6 from the Amasra field), designed to add 22 million standard cubic meters per day (SCMD) of gas production capacity. This will bring the field's total production capacity to approximately 40 million SCMD from a total of 52 wells across all phases.
Under the contract with Qidong Wison Energy Trading Ltd., CRESTwill engineer, manufacture, and supply a high-capacity Sea Water Filtration Package designed to meet the rigorous demands of the ultra-deepwater FPU. The system is a critical component for the FPU's operational integrity, providing essential seawater intake filtration for the platform's cooling, fire-fighting, and other utility systems.
The filtration package boasts the following core technical specifications:
• Treatment Capacity: 7,000 m³/h
• Filtration Precision: ≤ 1000 μm
This robust system ensures that only appropriately filtered seawater is utilized across the FPU's critical systems, protecting downstream equipment from marine debris and biological matter, thereby ensuring long-term operational reliability in the harsh Black Sea environment.
The Phase 3 development of the Sakarya Gas Field is more than just an engineering feat; it is a flagship project in Turkey's national energy strategy. By significantly boosting domestic gas supply capacity, the project aims to transform the country's energy landscape, enhance regional energy security, and solidify Turkey's position in the regional energy market.
Our Sea Water Filtration Package will play an indispensable role in supporting the FPU—the heart of Phase 3 operations. The FPU itself is a marvel of modern engineering, designed with a double-hull structure, an overall length of 282 meters, and a breadth of 54 meters. It features a gas export rate of 25 million SCMD and is engineered for a minimum 30-year design life, capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of the Black Sea.
